Reducing carbon emissions

Did you know that home heating is the largest source of UK household carbon emissions?

Low carbon heating & insulation

We need to almost entirely stop using fossil fuels for heating homes to have a chance to hit the UK’s overall net-zero targets. So, with energy prices hitting an all-time high, what a great time to look at insulation and renewable heating options!
Key Advice
  •    Much better home insulation is needed in most cases. Air and ground source heat pumps are worth considering if you are able to upgrade a property. Electric boilers for smaller properties are also a possiblity.
  •   Better insulation, modern heating controls, dressing appropriately and turning down the thermostat can all make a significant difference if you aren't able to make more significant changes.
  •   Poorly insulated houses with older gas boilers or oil heating.

Renewable electricity

Electricity generation is still a major source of Co2 emissions in the UK but there is hope because the cost of generating electricity from renewable sources is rapidly dropping and the proportion of UK energy generated from renewables is increasing every year. Moving away from coal and natural gas and speeding up the transition to renewable energy is an urgent part of the fight against climate change.
Key Advice
  •    Buy directly sourced 100% renewable electricity from an eco-friendly energy company. Install Solar Panels or other micro-generation systems in your home.
  •   100% Renewable Electricity provider as advertised by most electricity providers
  •   Non-renewable Electricity / Gas

Diet

Diet has a significant impact on carbon.emissions, this is mainly due to the high production emissions of meat and dairy products.
Key Advice
  •    A mainly or entirely vegetarian/vegan diet with signifcantly reduced or no consumption of meat and animal products. Reduced waste.
  •   Reducing the amount of meat you eat makes a big difference even if you don't go full vegetarian/vegan. (Particularly for beef)
  •   Meat and dairy products most days

Flight-free holidays

There is currently no way to reduce airplane emissions to the level needed. The only thing that makes a significant difference here is to not fly, or at least to seriously reduce the number of flights you take.
Key Advice
  •    Explore holidays in your home country. Travel by train and public transport. Remote collaboration and video conferencing tools for work.
  •   We need to stop flying!

Low carbon travel

We need to switch to methods of travel that are either already carbon neutral or that can become carbon neutral over the next few years.
Key Advice
  •    Walking, cycling or electric powered public transport.
  •   Bus/Train or other public transport options that could be upgraded to run off renewable energy in the future
  •   Petrol or Diesel car regularly used.

Finance

Money put into a pension or stock market funds is often invested on your behalf into companies involved in oil and gas extraction, causing or worsening the climate crisis.
Key Advice
  •    Ensure your pension is invested in environmentally responsible funds and businesses - ones that are not involved in oil & gas extraction.
  •   If you have a pension and haven't checked, then it's likely your pension is partly invested in oil and gas extraction companies.
